Unfortunately, Hawthorne lost all three points today before a ball had even been kicked. Due to a severe lack of players for a variety of reasons, the team was only able to field seven of our current players.
It had become obvious to the management last night that we were going to be struggling to field a team for today's game. With that in mind, we tried yesterday to draft in some additional players still registered on our books. We were successful in getting John K back involved, but even with him we could still only provide a team of eight. This left us with no option but to forfeit the points to Georges.
However, rather than go home, with the help of the Northfield management (who themselves had suffered an unfortunate turn of events) and four of their players, a hastily arranged friendly enabled some football to take place. An agreement of 30 minutes each way ensured the trip to a cold Buckley Hill was not in vain, as "Hawthfield" took on Georges JFC.
A somewhat scrappy game, which was understandable under the circumstances, still saw nine goals. Unfortunately, Hawthorne and Northfield were on the wrong end of a 6-3 scoreline. But for a couple of questionable offside decisions by the stand in referee, the game could, and possibly should, have been a much closer affair.
On a positive note, Jay managed to put an end to his goal drought and notched up his first with a well-taken penalty kick. Goals from Charlie and Mark enabled Hawthorne to get three goals for the second time this season.
Hopefully all of our players will be back next week just in time to face our new friends from Northfield...
